The One Where I got Domesticated

Ok, so for this academic year my roommate and I have decided that we'll cook more instead of going out to eat. There are two reasons for this. 1. Its definitely healthier since we're not going to mamak's so often and we get to choose what we put into our meals and 2. It saves petrol since we don't have to drive around finding for places to eat. In that light, I can say we have successfully cooked about 5 meals so far in the past week or so. 4 dinner's and 1 lunch. Granted we didn't exactly cook from scratch and we've so far been cooking easy stuff, like fried rice, omelettes and spaghetti but still for noobs we haven't done so badly I guess haha. Hey, I'm still alive aren't I : ) Anyways its been quite tough, learning how to chop vegetables, marinade meat, and cry through onions >_< But I think its well worth the effort. I'm now one step closer to total independence nyahahaha

Ps: I'll post pictures next time of the meals we cooked. Sorry but most of the time we were so hungry after cooking it we just wolfed it down.

Manga Online

Well for those Anime freaks out there, I have found a very nice online manga site. It has like a freaking lot of manga's for you to read online. Not bad, go check them out at www.mangavolume.com It might not be as updated as some of the other "dedicated" site that cater to only one series but its a definite check-out-worthy site. Did I mention it has a WIDE selection? Enjoy.

Things That Amused Me...

...These past two weeks. First last Thursday as I was having lunch with my housemate, Goh, I saw this really funny insert in the tray that they give you to take your food in. Ever heard of the title "Chief Happiness Officer"? Well, McDonalds has one. And he is none other than Ronald McDonald himself! Don't believe me? Check this out.

See the first item? He is CHO ;p

The other thing that amuses me constantly, or rather reminds me why I chose to go with a Mac is this.

And it happens all the time too. Now to be fair, these are public computers and are used by many people everyday but honestly, this constant reminder is what makes me proud to be a Mac owner. One thing I have to say though, using a Mac has kind of spoiled me. In the sense that I am so comfortable using my Mac, not having to deal with any major problems that might creep up with Windows that I think I'm beginning to lose my troubleshooting skills ~_~

Oh well. Back to studying for now. I hate exams!

Wow, looks like they not only have weird fruits and anime but they have crazy people who are on fire for Jesus too! Not bad, this really made me smile a big BIG smile.

A Month And A Bit More

If there's something that I'm anticipating greatly this year, its this. Mac OS X 10.5. Leopard. Scheduled to be released sometime in October. The successor to an already great Operating System, Tiger (10.4). This is the thing that will make Microsoft busy for the next 6 years! And here is a sneak preview of whats in store. It seems someone leaked the "Welcome Video" (The Video you see just after installing the OS) and I don't know whether this is the final version or not but hey, enjoy!

Blast From The Past!

Wow, I'm sure everyone knows this song. Its like freaking classic man. Tis a smidgen of gay but hey, that was the 80's man. Now I'm not really sure if this is the original music video or just one of them man. Its got everything man. Cheesy white men dancing, cheesy dance moves, with their cheesy fashion, cheesy camera work, fast zooms, but again... Its classic man. So anyways, enjoy : ) ...man.

One Step Closer

See the carrier in the top left hand corner?

To quote KennySia "Oh. My. Freaking. Gawd!" It is done ladies and gentlemen. The iPhone has been unlocked. If you can get it, you'll be able to use it. Now. I'm so ecstatic I'll just leave it at that first. Go check out the full gallery of an unlocked iPhone over at engadget and go see the people who unlocked it here (They're called, ironically enough, iphonesimfree). Its a software thing so thats good. But you gotta pay for it. Not sure about the pricing, stay tuned as we bring you more *hopefully*

Misery Business!

Now blogging from my university's computer lab (where I should be studying for my exam) and it sucks! The internet here is so friggin' slow, though I blame the ISP instead of the university. Or maybe I should blame them too! Well whatever it is, until I can get Streamyx (which isn't better by far anyway but its the best under current circumstances) in my house here in Semenyih, I won't be able to blog like usual. Oh well, anyways I leave you with my current favourite song. Misery Business by Paramore! Acoustic too : )

OMG! I think I'm falling in love <3

Random Stuff

Ok now I'm not really the kind of person who would mass post ok but this is really really REALLY weird. I just got two messages from people I don't know and its weird (did I already mention the REALLY part already? Coz if I didn't I have now). The first sms I got is the kind of sms you'd normally get from people whom you're not really close to. You know, the kind that you know has been forwarded like 1387519837 times telling you about how friendship is important and stuff (and it rhymes too). The other one is the really weird one. I just got sent RM25 in talk-time credit from a random person. I'm sure that it was a mistake so what should I do?

Friends

Here's another thing that made me laugh. Its from the episode where they were watching the Prom Video.

Joey: Some girl ate Monica!
Monica : Shut up! The camera adds 10 pounds
Chandler: Ahh, so how many camera's are actually on you

Classic Chandler LOL :D He's my favourite "Friend" haha.

Paramore and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

Paramore : Riot!

Wow! I have been listening to these guys for the past week or so. And all I can say is, I like! They are not super technical or anything, nor are they producing like totally blow-your-brains kind of music but their arrangements are really nice. My favourite song from their new album, Riot!, is Misery Business. It starts out with this really nice 30's or 40's style intro and then goes into their rock riff. Superb! Their lead singer is a female who goes by the name Hayley Williams. She's like a cross between Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne and Amy Lee, in terms of her voice and singing style. Now, I've actually heard about them quite awhile ago from my friend but never really took notice until now. I will definitely try to find their album and buy it.

Also listening to...
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus : Don't You Fake It

Another Rock band (pop punk according to wiki) whom I've heard of. Kinda reminds me of Blindside this one does muahahaha.

OMG We're So Screwed

Ok well, actually its our neighbours in Singapore who are screwed. And what are they screwed for? Well, downloading episode's of Bleach from Dattebayo. Amazing, the Singaporeans are really efficient. It seems they have tracked thousands of Bittorrent users and are accusing them of breaching their copyrights. They have successfully forced the ISP's to give up the names and are threatening them with legal action unless they pay a SGD 3.5k "fine" to them. Original article by TorrentFreak.com. So where does that leave us Bleach fans in Malaysia, I really don't know. If only these people would do what everyone wants, Anime with Japanese language and English subtitles I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

The I-Just-Know-I'm-Gonna-Screw-Up-Sometime Post

Ok, so I was having some problems with my laptop's battery right (crappy battery life and poor battery health according to System Profiler). So I call my nearest Apple Authorised Service Centre, tell them my predicament and ask them for advice. And they told me to bring my battery along with the computer's serial number and they'll swap a new one for me. Great! But now, my computer is basically batteryless and has to run plugged into the mains. Now that isn't a big problem since when I'm home I already do that. The problem is with the whole magsafe adapter. It stays in securely enough but I'm worried that my hand will brush up against it, or that I'll move my machine in such a way as to dislodge it thus cutting power to my machine. So now I'm like extra careful around the machine and I have this feeling, you know the feeling where you know something might go wrong and you try to avoid it but end up screwing up because you kept thinking about it and it happened? Yeah that kind of feeling. Oh man... I never really worried about this problem because last time, hey I had the battery : (

Review of The Edirol UM-1EX

As I've posted before, I would post a review of my new "toy" when I got the chance to play around with it. Well thanks to my good friend Lam, I did get a chance to go test this baby out. And to cut the story short, it was everything I dreamed it would be.

First things first,

The specifications:
("stolen" from Roland's website)
  • Fast and stable MIDI data transmission realized by FPT (Fast Processing Technology)
  • 1 MIDI in, 1 MIDI out
  • MIDI Thru switch
  • MIDI signal indicators
  • Complete cable-style body from PC end to MIDI ends
  • OS native driver support
  • USB bus powered
  • Plug and play!
You can see Roland's page of it here

What it Does:

Well basically its a USB to MIDI converter. So the MIDI part plugs into any standard keyboard out there or any MIDI controller. There are two MIDI plugs (one for input and one to output) so you can plug it into any MIDI sequencer and get the sequencer to play the sounds from your computer as well. The USB port plugs into your computer (obviously) and is truly plug and play, as in you don't need any fancy drivers though I can't speak for windows users since I've only tried this out on my mac. It supports Core Audio and Core MIDI so its Mac friendly : ) For those who are paranoid or who want to utilize their "high-quality", FPT Technology, you can install drivers which are available for Win 98/ME/XP/Vista and Mac OS 9/X. Frankly I've been using the thing as a plug and play module and I can say it rocks!

Ok so on to how I use it. Macs come with this fantastic program called Garage Band which I used to think was only good for making techno/trance like music or for playing around and not for doing anything serious. Boy was I wrong. After watching an online seminar showcasing the power of Garage Band I was impressed. Not only can you record you stuff into Garage Band and create and arrange music and all but there is one thing that they didn't mention which I thought about. Which is, you can actually use Garage Band as your synthesiser. That is super cool! Now no matter what keyboard I'm given to use, I can always rely on Garage Band to produce superb sounding instruments. This also means that what was once just Piano and Strings is no more! I am no more limited by the keyboard and its meagre bank of sounds/instruments. And the cool thing is that I can add more software instruments through the use of Jam Packs.

So now, with this means is that the keyboard itself is just a "controller" to my computer which is my synth. I tested it out on two keyboards one August night and I have to say, it rocks! It was exactly as I had imagined it to be. I just plugged it in, launched Garage Band and there it was, I could change the instruments to sound like a 12 String Guitar or a Violin or even a Saxophone. Cool I tell ya! And there's also organ sounds, cool effected sounds. And I even managed to match the organ sound that Matt Bellamy used on the song Feeling Good. I am totally stoked haha.

My Rating:
Well I give it a 4 out of 5. Why? Because out of all the nice things that it allows me to do, I still can't find a way to store it properly because of its "cable" design. So for now, it still sits in its original packaging but I will have to do something about that soon.

Holy Crap!

Holy crap indeed. Was going through Google Analytics, which is the way I track the statistics of my blog. And lo and behold, I found out I had 1 visitor from Irvine. And whoosh, that whole Pablo Fransisco act came into my head immediately haha. "Irvine, spoilt brats from Irvine" and "Why here's your ball, young man, ha ha ha ha". Don't believe me? Well here's a screen shot to prove it.

Not a big deal, I know. But hey, was interesting to me : )

Namewee

Ever heard about this guy before? No? He's the guy who wrote the Negarakuku song, and might be in quite a bit of trouble here in Malaysia. The government calling him rude and unpatriotic and planning to "recall" him or something (Read more about it in Fagatron's post about it). But I think he's just saying the things we all keep in our heart. Anyways, here's another song by him called Kawanku. Quite funny actually.

I Got A New Toy!

Edirol UM-1EX

Yup, Sunday church services will not be the same again. I hope. Man, the difficulty in locating this thing in Malaysia! Now to test out this thing, I will post a short review on it when I am done playing with it haha. What is it you ask? Well its basically a USB to MIDI converter/cable. What it does is, it allows me to plug in any keyboard with MIDI to my computer and use my computer as a synth. This is good, as it also means that I am not reliant on the keyboards sounds and can do a lot of cool stuff with GarageBand.

Women Like Girly Men?

Well according to this article here that seems to be the case. It seems men with more feminine looking features are more committed and less likely to stray according to the article. It seems though, that whatever the features, women tended to like healthier looking faces i.e. better complexion etc... Well maybe I should start using more facial products and start taking better care of my face then haha.

New iMacs, iLife '08

The new iMacs

iLife '08

Yes its true! New stuff from Apple! The new iMacs are indeed brushed metal (aluminium) and iLife '08 seems like its gonna kick some serious ass. Not only that iWork '08 is set to replace MS Office as the standard office suite for the Mac. It even comes with a spreadsheet app now, woot! Not that I'm complaining of course, I love iWork (check previous posts about why PowerPoint sucks)

Much ado about religion

What is it about Christianity that makes it special? What makes Christians differ from the rest of the world? Everyone else now seems to be using "Christian" means and methods of outreach/evangelism. We Christians are using the worlds methods for evangelism. In short, we're cross pollinating. So, any cynic can say that Christians don't hold an exclusive right to the truth, although we know we do. How do we, tell people we love about the gospel and not offend them? How do we spread the Good News without seeming close-minded and backward thinking? How do we make Biblical truths relevant to today's society?

PowerPoint, how I hate thee!

Look familiar? The bane of students everywhere. But we have to use it don't we, I mean what would university/college life be without the lovely experience of tinkering with the computer for like 10 minutes while your lecturer and all your other classmates bore holes into your back as sweat pours down your face while you curse and mutter under your breath why the stupid projector and computer won't talk to each other and display a @#%*&$ picture! We at Tales of a disgruntled PC user understand your pain.

One of the main gripes that I've encountered while using this stupid piece of software has got to do with something called "Presenter's View". If you've never heard of it before, its ok but I think most people out there who are even mildly familiar with computers knows what I'm talking about. So what is so bad about presenter's view? Well, on a Mac its actually not that bad. Which goes to show that microsoft doesn't just make crappy software, rather they make crappy software just for their own windows users. Ironic, I know. Ok, so now on to the main article!

Right, so here's the offender. Notice the red colour oval? Your presentation is presented as a vertical column with the slide that is currently being shown in the centre. Easy right? Looks straightforward? Wait till you actually TRY to navigate, the main verb here is TRY. The most natural thing one would think of would be to use the up and down arrow keys to navigate through right? WRONG! In PowerPoint, pressing the up key is the same as pressing the down key. It ALWAYS goes to the next slide. Neat isn't it! Bet you didn't know that though and I'm sure you have had the experience of trying to go back to the previous slide by pressing the up key repeatedly only to jump to the next slide, and then the next, and the next, looking oh so foolish at the same time. So, how do you navigate properly then? Well, see the blue colour oval? THAT is how you do it. You're supposed to press left and right to navigate through your slides. I'm sure those geniuses at microsoft did their GUI studies and were assured that people wanted to be purposely misled by giving them an upright/vertical column to see their slides while expecting them to actually press left and right to actually navigate through.
So, we've seen the main offender. Has anything changed since Vista? Well yes and no. Let me just illustrate the point.

So as you can see, in Vista everything looks so glassy and futuristic. This is PowerPoint 2007 by the way. Just so you don't get confused.

This is another one of my gripes with PowerPoint which hasn't been resolved. Unless you have a dual monitor setup, or you have your LCD projector hooked up, windows will not allow you to launch Presenter's view. They even give you a nice dialog box telling you so. How thoughtful.

Ahhh, there it is ladies and gentlemen. Microsoft did something right for a change. This time, slides are presented to you in a horizontal position so that the most natural thing is to go left and right. Oh, and they fixed the up down bug thingy too, how nice of them. Pressing the up key brings you to the previous slide, while pressing down advances you to the next slide.

I've never had those kinds of problems on a mac. Want to know why? Well two reasons. Number one is that the Mac Business Unit of microsoft must be where all the bright people are. Seriously, Office for Mac is so much better than Office for windows. I don't know why this is so, but I am so glad I'm using a Mac. Not to say that MS stuff is better than Apple's stuff but its just better than their windows product. Go figure.
Ok, so it does look like the windows version of presenter's tools BUT the key difference is that pressing the up key, actually does go to the previous slide! So, while I might be wondering why the hell Microsoft software looks so clunky and ugly it still works in this case. Oh and you don't actually have to be connected to a projector to make use of presenter view. Really nice!

The number two reason of why I don't have those kinds of problems, and this is the REAL reason is something called Keynote. Its an excellent piece of software developed by Apple software engineers which is so much simpler to use than power point. It may not be as powerful as power point, but it works so much better (as does all Apple technology) and doesn't give me as many headaches as windows/office does. So what does it look like? Well its gorgeous!
Its simple, easy to understand and most importantly reliable! What more could you ask for :D

And this is what happens when you actually start playing the keynote presentation. Its so easy, so intuitive. There's no way you will get lost trying to navigate through your slides. It just shows current slide, and next slide. I like simplicity. Its good.

So thats it for this week folks. We at Tales of a disgruntled PC user have a solution for all your PC related problems. Get a mac. Seriously!

Jamie Oliver

Also known as "The Naked Chef", I found out something really interesting about him. Well maybe you guys out there already know about this, but when I found out I was pleasantly surprised. Ok, so I got these few episodes of Oliver's Twist from a pal of mine, Fagatron, and you know I was boppin' along to the starting theme and I wanted to download it right, so I fired up my trusty new Safari web browser and typed in the first few lines in google (since I didn't know the title of the song) and went a-clicking away. The song goes like this...

No matter who you are,
Won't you come into my world?
Like a shooting star,
Take this journey with me to the heart,
Can't you see that this is just the start?

Well thats actually the chorus only but that is what is played during the start of the show. Ok, so I remember listening to the song right and I'm all like "Hey not bad, the drummer's pretty tight too. He uses double pedal and all" and so I find out that the song is performed by a band called Scarlett Division. So I fired up wikipedia and guess what I found. This band was formed by Jamie Oliver himself! When he was 13!!! And guess what, he's the drummer too!!!!
So yeah, there you go. I really honestly didn't know that. Not bad actually, a musician and a cook! Wow, no wonder he's already married and has model's as friends haha. Maybe I should take up cooking as well. And learn to play the drums.

Coming Soon...

I'm about to do this epic post on PowerPoint and how stupid it is. I mean really really stupid but because of how stupid it is, I'm having trouble getting it to behave properly for me to take screenshots and what not. So, stay tuned folks...

Mac OSX Software Update

Yes folks, to all my Mac brethren out there please update your software for the sheer unadulterated "phun" of it. Whats been updated? Well for me, the Safari beta has been updated to version 3.0.3, there is an Airport Extreme Update which supposedly improves the reliability of Airport connections (I've never had problems with AirPort so to me its just updating for updatings' sake), and a Security Update which is important! So people, launch your software updaters and update away. Oh, they all require a reboot.

Deepest Condolences [UPDATED] It was a hoax

Tis a sad day for any Bleach fan out there. Remember Dattebayo? The guys who currently do the fansubbing? Well on the 27th of July, one member of their staff passed away in a hospital due to bad policing. Original article here. Well it seems there are bad and idiotic policemen no matter where you live. Peace out dude, thanks for all your hardwork!

Well it seems I was had, nothing actually happened. It was all an elaborate joke. Oh well, you live and learn I guess ~_~
